The Politics of Love

Believe it or not there are politics involved in dating and falling in love. One of the purest and most genuine acts in the world is often tinged with the politics that make it almost impossible to get it right. There are a mess of unwritten rules and many fears of judgment and criticism that keep the politics alive and well.
When we engage in the politics of love we surrender to the idea that love is not pure and that our attraction to someone has an ulterior motive. After all, the politics of love were set up to test someone’s devotion and they were set in place to protect ourselves from something that was less than pure.
I do believe it is way past time to rewrite the politics of love. The games that playing with these politic requires can be truly a menacing and heart aching experience. You want to love with an open heart and without fear, and the politics of love make that almost impossible. As we enter into a relationship there will be politics behind every significant step. The road to love is littered with the politics of when sex is acceptable and when it is a good time to move in together. If we throw aside the politics we can listen to our hearts and our own best judgment and move forward in ways that are right for us. In all reality the politics and love that go together simply don’t even belong in the same sentence.
